The Foundation: Certificate of Analysis (CoA)
Every batch of chemicals should come with a Certificate of Analysis (CoA)—the manufacturer's quality report for that specific batch with actual test results, not a generic spec sheet.
What a Proper CoA Includes
- Batch/Lot Number: Must match drum labels and shipping documents for traceability.
- Manufacture Date: Chemicals have shelf lives. Know how old your product is.
- Test Parameters and Results: Test method (ASTM, ISO), specification limit, and actual result.
- Authorized Signature: From QC manager. Unsigned CoAs are worthless.
Key Quality Parameters by Product Type
For Monomers (Acrylic Acid, MMA, Styrene)
- Purity: Primary assay affecting polymerization kinetics
- Inhibitor Concentration: MEHQ 10-20 ppm for storage stability
- Water Content: Karl Fischer titration, critical for moisture-sensitive applications
- Color: Clear, water-white is ideal; yellowing suggests degradation
For Solvents (Butyl Acetate, IPA)
- Purity: GC analysis for main component and impurities
- Water Content: Critical for coatings and adhesives
- Evaporation Residue: Non-volatile contaminants
For Carbon Black
- CTAB Surface Area: Particle size and reinforcement potential
- DBP Absorption: Structure measurement affecting compound viscosity
- Sieve Residue: Ensures no oversized agglomerates
Third-Party Inspection
Companies like SGS, Bureau Veritas, and Intertek offer chemical inspection services including sampling, visual inspection, laboratory testing, and inspection reports. Cost: $300-800 per day—cheap insurance against rejecting shipments or production downtime.
When to Use Third-Party Inspection
- New supplier (first 2-3 shipments)
- High-value orders
- Critical applications (aerospace, medical, food contact)
- Past quality issues
ISO Certifications
- ISO 9001: Quality management systems baseline
- ISO 14001: Environmental management
- ISO 45001: Occupational health and safety
- Responsible Care®: Chemical industry EHS excellence
Incoming Quality Control (IQC)
Implement your own IQC program with sampling plans, quick tests (visual, density, refractive index, pH), retain samples for shelf life plus 6 months, and full testing for critical parameters.
